Is there a way to make it so you're not automatically subscribed to a thread when you post in it?

Try this. On the User CP, go to the following:

Board Preferances > Edit Posting defaults > Notify me upon replies by default

Change that to "No', and see if that works.

I did that, but I still got alerts for a thread that I started (though I suppose those could be from before I changed the settings...I'll have to check).

Go to User CP Board Preferences > Manage subscriptions. Then check the boxes and click "Unwatched Marked."
